Support for Our Future Nurses
Loyalties to the St. Luke’s School of Nursing (SON) run deep. Doris M. Begala Ursic graduated from the SON in 1945 and loved to share stories with her family about how much she enjoyed her time at St. Luke’s. Dedicated to her calling as a nurse, Doris enlisted and became a member of the U.S. Army Cadet Nurse Corps. Her first assignment was at a veteran’s hospital in Richmond, Virginia, where she cared for wounded veterans returning from war. After the nurse corps, Doris returned to work at St. Luke’s Hospital where she worked in maternity and med-surg.
Doris was as dedicated to her alma mater as she was to her nursing career. She attended as many reunions as possible and proudly wore her nursing pin at each one. In 2015, she attended her 70th—and last—class reunion at the age of 91 and has the photo to prove she was there!
When Doris passed away in December of 2021, she instructed her family to make a gift to the St. Luke’s School of Nursing in her memory. She also requested that her obituary direct others to make donations to the school.
The gifts made in memory of Doris will help support future nurses who struggle financially to balance work, school and family. Your kindness in supporting the St. Luke’s School of Nursing though your estate plan can make a difference in the future of nursing here in our community or wherever our students eventually land.
